A single decision reshaped the trajectory of Michael Polk’s career leaving Procter & Gamble after three years to pursue an MBA at Harvard Business School. Polk had spent his early professional years in manufacturing and research roles, first supervising a papermaking machine in Pennsylvania and then working in research and development in Cincinnati, Ohio.
He has said there is no doubt his Harvard degree opened new doors and accelerated his move into marketing and general management, fields that were a departure from his engineering background at Cornell University. That shift set the stage for a career spent leading some of the largest consumer goods companies in the country.
From Classroom To Commercial Leadership
After earning his MBA, Michael Polk joined Kraft Foods, where he built experience in brand management and sales before advancing into general management. He eventually led the Post Cereals Division in North America and the Asia Pacific region for Kraft Foods International, gaining broad exposure to commercial operations across different markets. He also guided the integration of Nabisco into Kraft Foods following its acquisition.
Unilever recruited Polk in 2003 to lead its United States foods business, and his responsibilities grew from there. He served as president of the Americas from 2006 to 2010, overseeing brands and operations across North America and Latin America, before taking on a global category role based in London.
The commercial and marketing foundation Michael Polk Newell Brands built after Harvard carried him into his eight years as chief executive of Newell Rubbermaid, where he applied the same consumer focused thinking to a very different kind of company.
